I have traveled to many other Asian countries, including Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and i always make a point to try their local rice cakes. Based on my experience, what truly sets Korea apart from other Asian nations is the sheer variety and unique, chewy textures of our Tteok. If you want to experience the authentic culinary heartbeat of the city, going on a personal Tteok food crawl is easily one of the best things to do in Seoul.
Where to Eat: How to Find Tteok shops

Trust me—just step into whichever local Tteok store is closest to you, and you are bount to love it. Because these shops are so accessible, it is muc more useful for you to know what to order rather than where to go. With that in mind, let's introduce a few of the most famous, beloved varieties of Tteok that locals absolutely adore!
The Best Part? It's incredibly Budget-Friendly!
While prices can vary slightly depending on the specific boutique or neighborhoold,
a standard package of Tteok typically costs between 3,000 ~ 4,000 KRW (roughly $2 to $3 USD), regardless of the variety. Because it is so inexpensive, there's absolutely no need to overthink it. Just step up to the counter and grab whatever catches your eye!
Garae-tteok: Rice cake stick

While it is most famously known as the main ingredient in Tteokbokki, Garae-tteok is the ultimate foundation of all Korean rice cakes. It is completely simple, honest, and straightforward, made without any flashy techniques or added decorations.
Yet, its clean, mild flavor and remarkably chewy texture make it exceptionally addictive, even though it appears plain at first glance.
The Pro-tip:
If you get the chance, try pan-frying Garae-tteok until it gets a little crispy on the outside, then dip it into honey or Jo-cheong, a traditional Korean grain syrup.
The crispy, sweet contrast completely breaks up the plain flavor, creating a sweet and delightfully chewy masterpiece.
Kkul-tteok: Honey rice cake

The second variety you absolutely have to try is Kkul-tteok, which literally translates to "honey rice cake"(Kkul means honey in Korean). These colorful, glossy treats are filled with a mix of sweet syrup, brown sugar, and toasted, grounded sesame seeds.
Thanks to the hidden filling inside, the moment you pop one into your mouth and bite down, a wave of sweet honey and rich, nutty goodness completely floods your palate.
And because they are perfectly bite-sized, they are incredibly eas to eat on the go. They also pair beautifully with slightly bitter drinks like coffee, green tea, or Oolong tea.
Since they are naturally sweet and nutty, they are a massive hit with children and a foolproof choice for anyone trying traditional Korean desserts for the very first time!

Songpyeon: Half-moon rice cake

The outer dough is made from glutinous rice flour and is frequently infused with mugwort or ramie leaves. This gives the cake a gorgeous green hue and ensures that every bite delivers a beautiful balance of sweetness paired with a subtle, earthy herbal aroma.
We normally eat Songpyeon during Chuseok (the autumn harvest festival) to express gratitude for a bountiful harvest. I even remember making these by hand with my family when i was young!
The good news is that you don't have to wait for the autumn season to try it.
While it holds a special place in our fall traditions, Songpyeon is a staple dessert that you can easily find and purchase year-round at almost any local Tteok shop near you.
Injeolmi-tteok: Bean-powder-coated Rice Cake

The final variety i highly recommend is Injeolmi, a rice cake that boasts a simple yet incredibly powerful flavor profile. It consists of bite-sized pieces of pounded glutinous rice dough heavily dusted in roasted soybean powder.
What does it taste like? The moment it hits your tongue, the deep, nutty aroma of the roasted soybean powder floods your mouth. then, as you keep chewing, the natural sweetness and delightfully elastic texture take over.
One of the best things about Injeolmi is that it is a universal crowd-pleaser with absolutely no polarizing flavors. Virtually everyone who tries it loves it!
If you want a foolproof introduction to traditional textures, I definitely recommend making Injeolmi a priority on your food list.
