Escape the Crowds: Yanghwa Hangang Park Picnic Guide

Yanghwa Hangang Park Picnic

Yanghwa Hangang Park

The Han River (Hangang) is truly something to be grateful for.
It is the lifeblood of Seoul, providing the city not only with its essential water supply but also with beautiful, wide-open spaces where we can unwind, relax, and chill out.

The only downside? Overwhelmingly popular spots like Yeouido and Banpo Hangang Par attract such massive crowds that finding a decent spot to sit can feel nearly impossible. instead of leaving you feeling refreshed and recharged, fighting through those weekend crowds can actually leave you feeling more drained than when you arrived.

That is exactly why i want to introduce you to a fantastic alternative.
If you are looking for a riverside escape that is far less crowded than the major hot spots but every bit as beautiful, Yanghwa Hangang Park is the perfect place for you.

How to get to Yanghwa Hangang Park

There are several ways to get to Yanghwa Hangang Park depending on where your journey begins, but i want to share the most straightforward and scenic route with you.

My highly recommended route starts from Seonyudo Station (Line 9), Exit 2.

⚠️Crucial Travel Tip: Make sure you board a Local train (All-Stops train) to get here. The Express train does not stop at Seonyudo Station! On the station platform screens, Local trains are typically color-coded in green, while Express trains are highlighted in red.

① Head straight from Exit 2 (5~7 min)
Seonyudo Station
Once you step out of Exit 2, simply walk straight down the street until the sidewalk turns into a small path leading toward a pedestrian overpass.

② Cross the pedestrian overpass (2min)
Pedestrian overpass
Walk up the path and cross the pedestrian overpass, which will take you safely right over the bustling highway below.

③ Take the stairs down at the bridge (1 min)
Keep walking until you arrive directly in front of the Seonyudo Seongsu Sky Bridge. Instead of crossing this second bridge onto Seonyudo Island, take stairs leading down to ground level.

Welcome! you have officially arrived at Yanghwa Hangang Park. Grab a spot, take a deep breath, and enjoy the peace and quiet!

The Best Spots to Pick Up Food before You Go

Once you cross over into Yanghwa Hangang Park, your food options become very limited. Unlike the more commercialized parks, the only places to buy food inside Yanghwa Hangang Park are the local convenience stores. Because of this, I strongly recommend grabbing your picnic food around Seonyudo Station before you head in.

As a local resident of the Seonyudo neighborhood, I have personally eaten at these spots countless times. If you aren't craving anything specific or are having trouble deciding what to eat, Just follow my lead! Here are my absolute local spots to pack the perfect picnic:

Gimbap Cheoreom (김밥처럼)
Gimbap Cheoreom
As you can probably guess from the name, this is a dedicated, highly popular neighborhood spot for Gimbap. They offer a wide variety of fillings on their menu. If you want to experience true, freshly rolled Korean Gimbapㅡrather than pre-packaged, chilled ones you find in convenience storesㅡyou absolutely have to stop by.

An extra bonus for bloggers and Instagram lovers: their packaging is beautifully designed and looks incredibly pretty in picnic photographs!

Todak The Chicken Shop (토닭 더치킨샵)
Todak The Chicken Shop
This isn't a massive, generic fast-food chicken franchise; it is a beloved, independent local restaurant. They are absolute masters at frying chicken. In fact, the neighborhood loves this place so much that you can find local reviews online saying things like, "Thank you to the owner for opening this restaurant here in Seonyudo!"
It is crisp, juicy, and the ultimate comfort food for a sunny day by the water.

No Brand (Super market)
No Brand
No brand is a mid-sized supermarket located right near the station. Its name literally means you aren't paying extra for a fancy brand name or corporate marketingㅡyou are just getting high-quality products at incredibly affordable prices. It is the ultimate spot to stock up on a huge variety of snacks, chips, soft drinks, and desserts without breaking the bank, even if you grab a massive handful of treats.

*Local pro tip for beer Lovers: While No Brand is great for buying wine or snacks, do not buy your beer here! Because No Brand stores their beers at room temperature, they won't be cold. For a perfectly chilled, refreshing beer, wait and purchase your cans at the convenience store right inside Yanghwa Hangang Park instead!

Top Picnic Spot Recommendations inside the Park

Yanghwa Hangang Park offers two main types of picnic zones depending on the vibe you are looking for. Here is how to choose the best area for your setup:

The riverside spots (best for views)
The riverside spots
There is plenty of wide-open space to lay out your picnic mat right alongside the edge of the Han River. Sitting here, looking out across the water at the city skyline and the beautiful buildings on the opposite bank, brings an immediate sense of peace and comfort.

*Things to Consider: The only catch with the riverside area is that the ground has a slight slope as it lead down toward the water. If you prefer a completely flat surface to lay down or keep your drinks steady, you might want to consider the next option.

The Running-Path Spots (Best for Tents & Comfort)
The Running-Path Spots
If you head slightly further back alongside the main running path, you will find large, spacious green zones. The absolute best part about this area is that it is a designated tent-allowable zone, meaning you permitted to pitch a small pop-up tent for an incredibly cozy, private picnic.
Keep in Mind: A tent is completely optional! You absolutely do not need a tent to enjoy your picnic.

*Things to Consider: You might feel a tiny bit of disappointment that your view of the river is blocked from this zone. However, the ground is completely flat, and having your own little private shelter makes it a fantastic trade-off for a relaxing afternoon.

How to Picnic If you Forgot your Mat (Pro Tips)

If you arrive at the park only to realize you forgot your picnic mat, there is absolutely no need to feel discouraged or give up on your plans! Yanghwa Hangang Park has plenty of fantastic options where you can sit back and relax without ever needing a mat. Here are my favorite local workarounds:

Free outdoor tables & seating
ree outdoor tables & seating
If you walk through the park, you will notice a great selection of wooden outdoor tables and benches scattered all over the grassy areas. They are completely free to use don't cost a single Won. However, they are highly coveted, you will need to arrive early or leave it up to the luck, as they strictly operate on a first-come, first-served basis!

The traditional Korean Pavilion
A traditional Korean Pavilion
If you want an upgrade from a standard park bench, look for a traditional wooden structure called a Jeongja. This is a beautiful, wide-open pavilion built with raised wooden flooring that sits comfortably above the damp grass.

It's ultimate local relaxation spot. Simply take off your shoes before stepping on to the wooden deck, and you can comfortably sit, stretch out, or even lie down for a quick afternoon nap in the shade.

The Ultimate Backup Plan
7-eleven Han River Renaissance Yanhwa Branch No.1

Are all tables and pavilions already taken? Don't panic! We still have one final option, even if it requires a short 10-minute walk down the riverside path.

Open up your map and search for the 7-eleven Han River Renaissance Yanhwa Branch No.1. The specific convenience store features a massive outdoor patio packed with tons of tables and plastic chairs for visitors.  Not only can you enjoy a completely hassle-free picnic here without a mat, but you are also right next to the refrigeratorㅡmeaning a perfectly chilled beer, hot, instant Hangang Ramyeon are just steps away.
