Where to stay in Seoul?
If you are planning a trip to Seoul, Korea, the first thing that pops into your head could be "where to stay in Seoul" to optimize your itinerary.
As a local Korean who has lived in Seoul for more than 30 years, I am going to unveil a list of recommended places to stay in Seoul, along with the unique traits of each area.
Downtown Seoul: Myeongdong, Seoul Station, Euljiro & Jongno
The very first area we recommend for your home base is the historical center of Seoul, which includes bustling hubs like Myeongdong, Seoul Station, Euljiro, and Jongno.
This vibrant district—officially known as the CBD (Central Business District)—served as the original capital druing the historic Joseon Dynasty. Because of this, it is the absolute, ultimate heart of the city.
Staying in this central district offers three massive advantages for international travelers:
① Effortless Access to Cultural Heritage
Because this area has been the capital for hundreds of years, it is surrounded by Seoul's most iconic historic landmarks, including majestic palaces like Gyeongbokgung and Changgyeonggung. Choosing a hotel here means you can easily explore these stunning cultural heritage sites on foot or via a quick subway ride—with absolutely no stressful, long-distance planning required.
② Direct, Stress-free Airport transit
Getting to your hotel after a long flight is completely seamless. By hopping on the non-stop AREX Express Train, you can travel directly from Incheon International Airport to Seoul Station in just 43minutes without a single transfer. Setting up your base camp here allows you to cut down on exhausting commute times and maximize every single minute of your Seoul itinerary.
③ Perfect Connectivity to the Rest of Seoul
As you can guess from the name, this neighborhood is literally situated right in the geographical center of Seoul. It serves as the ultimate transportation hub, giving you an endless array of subway lines and bus routes that can easily take you to any corner of the city you want to explore.
Seonyudo & Dangsan Area: Yeongdeungpo-gu
Next up is an area i know inside and out, since i actually live right around here: the Seonyudo and Dangsan area. While this neighborhood might not be as widely known as the classic tourist hotspots, I am here to tell you that staying in this hidden gem comes with some incredible local advantages.
Staying here offers three unique benefits for travelers:
① Unbeatable for Gimpo Airport Travelers
Is your flight landing at Gimpo Airport? If so, I highly recommend considering this area for your home base. Dangsan ans Seonyudo are incredibly close to Gimpo Airport—in fact, taking the Line 9 Express train from Dangsan Station will get you to the airport terminal in just 15 minutes. Staying here completely eliminates unnecessary, exhausting commute times.
② Seamless Access to Han River Park
One of the absolute best perks of staying in this neighborhood is how effortlessly close you are to Han river. Whether you choose a hotel near Seonyudo or Dangsan, you are just a short walk away from the Han River.
*If you stay near Seonyudo: I highly recommend taking a stroll over to Yangwha Han River Park or the beautifully tranquil Seonyudo Park Island.
*If you stay near Dangsan: You can easily access the riverfront walkway by searching for "7-Eleven Hangang Renaissance Yangwha Branch No.1" on Google Maps. It leads you right to a fantastic spot to enjoy a ramyeon by the river!
③ A Peaceful, Authentic Local Atmosphere
Compared to the chaotic neon streets of downtown, this neighborhood is remarkably peaceful and refreshingly uncrowded. Because it is a vibrant residential area, staying here allows you to slow down and truly experience what it feels like to live in Seoul as a local. If you are the type of traveler who dislikes loud, crowded environments and wants a quiet, cozy neighborhood to come home to, this is the perfect option for you.
Hongdae & Hapjeong: Mapo-gu
Our third recommendation for your Seoul home base is the high-energy Hongdae and Hapjeong area. While it isn't right next door to the airport, it only takes about an hour, give or take, to get here directly from Incheon international Airport via the Airport Railroad. Despite the short commute, staying in this vibrant district comes with some absolute, unbeatable advantages.
Here are the three main reasons why international travelers fall in love with this area:
① Endless Trendy, Aesthetic Cafes
Because this neighborhood is surrounded by several of Korea's top universities—including Hongik University, Yonsei University, and Sogang University—it is ultimate breeding ground for youth trends. You can find incredibly unique, aesthetic cafes on almost every single street corner. If you are a traveler who loves cafe-hopping and hunting for the perfect Instagram-worthy photo, this area is an absolute paradise.
② A Massive Variety of Shopping Spots
Another massive perk of setting up your base camp here is the sheer volume of shopping options right at your doorstep. The streets are lined with trendy indie clothing boutiques, vintages shops, and quirky lifestyle accessory stores. Simply exploring the local shops to see what current Korean fashion looks like and browsing the unique accessories is a completely fresh and exciting experience.

This neighborhood is packed with energy during the day, but it shines even brighter at night. Thanks to the massive local student population, the streets are filled with an endless selection of lively bars and restaurants that stay open until the very late hours of the night—with many closing the next morning! it is also the undisputed capital of Seoul's clubbing and indie live-music scene. If you love great food, drinking with friends, or dancing the night away to incredible music, this is the place to be.
Final Thoughts
While there are other famous districts in Seoul like Yeouido, Gangnam, and Jamsil, i chose to focus on the areas above because they offer the absolute best balance for international travelers. From my point of view, staying in Gangnam or Jamsil can feel quite isolated because they are quite far from the international airports. Plus, because Seoul's subway system is so exceptionally connected, you can easily visit Yeouido, Gangnam, and Jamsil as day trips from any of the home bases i recommended in this post!
