Budae Jjigae in other words Army Stew
Budae jjigae in otehr words army stew is one of my favorite food.
And it does not only go for me but also goes for almost all of Korean people.
It is like stew that boiled with various hams, sausages, sort of mince and some vegetables in it. And It is perfect food for meal as well as drinking alcohol.
The area that Budae jjigae came out first is around military troop in all over Korea.
So each area has some kind of their own style of making budae jjigae.
It would be fun to know the difference of each area`s budae jjigae style.
But it is impossible for travelers to go all over Korea and taste various kind of Budae jjigae. You don`t have worry.
There are tons of budae jjigae place in Seoul and i would like to focus on army stew place around Hongdae.
Heungbu's budae jjigae (흥부네 부대찌개)
This restaurant has been Running for over 40 years in same place
They are in charge of lunch time of students and office worker around Hongdae.
And they are specialized in only making budae jjigae.
So the only menu that they have is basic budae jjigae or budae jjigae with seafood.
Heungbu`s budae jjigae has 5 to 7 different ham ans sausage. So it give budae jjigae various taste and texture.
They say that it`s closed-to-Uijeongbu-traditional style of budae jjigae that have no kimchi in it, which give us crispy finish that is so refreshing.
Maybe that is why many people also come to this restaurant to relieve hangover.
It is not only cost-effective but also delicious budae jjigae.
Plus, there are review that foreign travelers and students commented.
And there rating is really high. So trust their taste and visit this restaurant.
It is located around Hongdae subway station. It takes about 3~4 minutes from Exit 7

This restaurant is also really famous for their deep soup and cost effectiveness.
in students and office worker around Hongik university.
They are known as using beef bone broth to their budae jjigae.
This broth give it deep and tasty soup.
And their specialty is that they have various styles of budae jjigae.
Budae jjigae with beef, budae jjigae with gimchi, budae jjigae with dumpling etc..
You can have fun to choose one among various styles of budae jjigae.
They are also located close to Heungbu`s budae jjigae.
It`s just 3 to 4 minutes walk from Hondae subway station Exit 7

Uijeongbu budae jjigae (의정부 부대찌개)
Don`t get me wrong. It`s not the restaurant placed in Uijeongbu.
They are placed near Hongik university, But strictly saying, they are closer to Mangwon subway station. It only takes 5 minutes from Exit 1.
(You should know that it takes about 15 minutes which is 1km distance give or take)
Plus, this restaurant is Local-people-go-often place.
Although it`s placed around Mangwaon subway station, it is still near Hongdae.
And i think it`s worth taking 15minutes-walk to get there.
Cause they have only one menu just 'basic budae jjigae'.
It means they are confident in their budae jjigae to the extent that they don`t sell any other menus.
As you can see the name of restaurant, they have Uijeongbu style of budae jjigae which is specialized in vegetables broth. So their soup is very neat.
So if you want to indirectly experience taste of Uijeongbu style of budae jjigae, I recommend this place.
