Modeled after LG Display

LG Display LOGO

This webtoon vividly depicts the transition from the feature phone era to the smartphone era in the display industry.
It points exactly to the era when small LCD screens in feature phones were replaced by large OLED.

How does this webtoon describe the transition to the smartphone era and show such expert knowledge about OLED?

It is because A Man`s Man is based on the real-life Korean company LG Display.

Technically the webtoon is set between the late 2000s and the early 2010s.
At that time LG Display was a key partner for Apple.
And Apple was raving about Retina Display produced by LG Display.

Basing the plot on actual industry history is what makes this webtoon so incredibly realistic.

Written by LG Display insider

The writer of A Man`s Man

Another Factor that add to the realism of this webtoon is that the original writer is a current employee at LG Display.
It has been almost 17years since the writer 'Kim Tae Koong started his career at LG Display in 2009.

Normally having a side job is against company policy in Korean corporate culture.

In Kim Tae Koong`s case, once the novel became a hit and the readership grew, he disclosed it to his superiors and requested formal permission to balance his job at LG with his writing career.

For the company, It`s great opportunity to indirectly build brand awareness among potential customers through this novel.
So the company allowed he to continue writing his novel.

Because he is a insider of LG Display, the office politics and workplace conflicts scene seem to be more vivid than other office novels.
Naturally, this hyper-realism carries over into the webtoon adaptation.

It`s a totally office webtoon. Then where does the title come from?

When the writer was first preparing to launch the series, he didn`t want a generic or obvious title that gave everything away.

While the writer was stuck with the title, His mentor Jo Seok-ho recommended the current title A Man`s Man(Sangnamja) and he decided to use it.

Some interest thing is since the webtoon is famous for it`s realistic depiction of a company that looks a lot like LG Electronics, some readers quickly started making a connection to real-world history.

However, the writer has forcefully denied this. Despite the rumors, the writer insists that the title has absolutely nothing to do with Chairman Koo's pen name or any specific historical figure.
