The dream Life of Mr. Kim

Netflix recently has released a new TV series 'The dream Life of Mr. Kim', which is actually an adaptation of a Webtoon. 

I, as a person who not only read a Webtoon but also watch a TV series of 'The dream Life of Mr. Kim, find TV series is a little different from the original webtoon. 

So i want to list some differences between the Webtoon and their TV adaptation, especially in the point how TV series differ from the original. 

A main character is different

'A main character is not Mr. Kim in the Webtoon'

I think it`s the biggest difference that a main character in the Webtoon is a manager Song, 'Song Ik-Hyeon.' 

And one more interest thing about manager Song is that he`s an successful real estate investor on the side.

Multiperspectivity narrative

The entire story is unfolded amid Mr. Kim in TV series. 

On the other hand, The webtoon unroll the narrative through various characters. 

The webtoon starts it`s story through Mr. Kim, same as TV series does.

And it goes to Junior manger Jeong's story, which is all about his married life and living beyond his means. 

And the Webtoon moves to a staff Kwon's story, which is about worries and concerns that she is struggling with. 

The story actually shifts between a manager Jeong and a staff Kwon. 

And finally the narrative enter it`s final stage by showing manager Song`s trauma and how he overcome it. 

In the Webtoon, 'The dream Life of Mr. Kim is more like combined stories that all generations can relate to. Not just a story about a man in his 50s who gets laid off.

The reason Mr. Kim transferred to the factory

In TV series, Mr. Kim`s was sent from the head office to the factory

as the company tried and forced him to quit. 

But the reason that he was sent to the factory in the Webtoon is that

an executive Baek wants him to identify his weakness and turn them into strengths. 

So the company and an executive Baek really wanted him to get promoted after he overcome his weakness. But he didn`t notice it`s intention and missed it in the Webtoon.

Mr. Kim`s son 

Even though TV series describe Mr. Kim`s son is a little silly,

he is thriving in his own business in the Webtoon.  

In the Webtoon, he refuses to work for the company, going against Mr. Kim`s wishes. 

Instead, he wants to make it on his own by running a online store.

And in the beginning of the webtoon, his online store is booming. 

It looks like His income surpasses Mr. Kim at the end of this webtoon. 

Romantic relationship

And finally in the webtoon, this might be a little shocking, Mr. Kim`s girl friend is a staff Kwon who worked together with Mr. Kim. 

It`s funny moment that Mr. Kim, his son and a staff Kwon are all surprised when they run in to each other. 

I think romantic relationship in the webtoon is more natural. 

Personally i don`t really buy the romantic subplot between Mr. Kim`s son and a female character who was not in the webtoon. 

These are major differences between the webtoon and TV series of 'The dream Life of Mr. Kim.'

I think TV series tires to focus so much on Mr. Kim to stay true its title. 

And the webtoon focuses each character`s narrative comprehensively which makes stories more three-dimensional. 

So if you are given a chance to read the webtoon, i highly recommend it. 

You will love it.
